Kiwifruit is grown in more than 30 countries, with production increasing every year. Kiwifruit was introduced to Turkey in the late 1980s. Production in Turkey has increased in the last twenty years and is now close to 65,000 tonnes, with the potential for further growth. Half of the production in Turkey is from Yalova and Bursa Provinces and the other half from the northern part of the country, especially the Middle and Eastern Black Sea regions. The city of Yalova is at the heart of kiwifruit production in Turkey.
A range of studies on Actinidia species will be presented during the symposium. Major topics for presentations will include breeding, cultivation techniques, diseases/pests, and post-harvest, although papers about other fields will also be accepted. It is also proposed that the symposium will bring together people from the global kiwifruit world of science and commerce, including researchers, producers, and marketers from different countries.
Yalova is located in north-western Turkey, near the eastern coast of the Sea of Marmara. It is only 1 hour away from the two big cities of Istanbul and Bursa. Yalova has a number of tourist attractions, including the “Yalova Atatürk Mansion”, hot springs and Black Church. The first settlement in the region dates back to the Prehistoric Period, around 3000 BC.
